Miami Beach Mixed Use
Location: 224 23rd Street + 300 23rd Street / Miami Beach FL 33139
Date: June-August, 2017
Exploration of architectural systems, structural, environmental, life safety, assembly and enclosure on building form, content and expression. We started off design thinking about the relationship that the buildings could have with the city. There is no place in Miami Beach where a building is actually used on the exterior, perhaps the New World Symphony but not quite. I wanted people to see the buildings in general as an urban space, that is accessible and penetrable with people, light, wind, etc...
Our first thought was to relate both buildings together. We wanted one to be a continuation of the other and to read as one complex. So we started by doing terraces that open in liberty avenue, then on 23rd street and have stairs. Which can be closed at any moment to become a plaza that is connected on the lower floor, becoming a market or a fair, etc....
The building programs is commercial, parking, and residential/offices. We wanted to include the parking as a free structure that hangs between the columns. It is found in both sites because we wanted it to be separated by privacy. Residents should have their own parking, as well as visitors. And also have the parking be a continuous line.
