Carriage House Typology

Location: Savannah, Georgia
Date: January-April 2016

Status: Unbuilt

The site shall be a typical carriage house site found in Savannah. The site is 20’-0” deep by 24’-0” wide by 24’-0” high. One parking space is to be maintained (12’-0”wide x 18’-0” deep x 10’-0” high minimum). The garden area is 20’-0” deep by 24’-0” wide.

Your carriage house must contain a Poetic Place/Idea Space. Although it would certainly be desirable that poetry and ideas infuse every aspect of your project, the PPIS is the one place/space in the project where the poetry of your idea is in the foregrounded. It is here that if all else is somehow lost in the years to come your project would be able to be seen and understood by future inhabitants and visitors.

The home shall be a place to write, to read, to cook and store food, to eat, to sleep, to store clothes, to store 500 books, and sink, a shower, a toilet, a stair and a covered porch. The primary entry shall be from East Jones Lane. The garden is to be designed to accommodate a place to read, eat and rest. A small kitchen garden (20sqft min) and fountain (10 sqft min) shall also be included in this space. The stair to the back of the main house is to be redesigned. Please note there shall be only built-ins. All built-ins shall be designed to accommodate the needs of the program.
